Parts
of this "old-style" layout date to the 1930's,
when the toddler Wigwam resort boasted the only golf
west of Phoenix; in the late 1950s Robert Trent Jones
Sr. polished up the twentysomething, crafting "a
short gen" that's "enjoyable" for lightweights;
heavy hitters sing the blues over the "oftentimes
boring" track that's "nothing special"
compared with its "incredible namesake hotel.

"if
a traditional-looking course is to your liking",
the strong bunkering and "elevated, volcano-like
greens" might have you hailing this "longstanding
great" design by longstanding great Robert Trent
Jones Sr. as "the best open to the public on the
west side" of Phoenix; newfangled foozlers who
find the "toughest of the three" at Wigwam
to be "nice but not spectacular" suggest that
"time has passed it by" and it's lost its
glitter.

Across
the raod to the west of its cousins, this mid-'70s layout
is named for its architect, Red Lawrence, who designed
some desert winners; despite a challenging closing stretch,
however, this traditional, tree-lined flatty serves
up only "so-so golf"; better to skip the round
and go straight for the "great facilities",
including the innovative Arizona Kitchen restaurant
at the adjacent hotel.
